Description

Good mid 19th century framed marriage sampler. The sampler with the names of Ann Stewart and Dr McLeod which would suggest to me it was made for a marriage. The whole sampler is a pleasing design with a nice Georgian style cottage in the middle with various stylised trees and plants. The colours are slightly faded all over but the sampler is basically in pretty good condition overall.

A marriage sampler is a piece of needlework historically created to commemorate a wedding, often featuring the couples names, initials, marriage date, and symbolic motifs such as hearts, houses, or flora.

These pieces were typically worked in silk or wool embroidery threads on a hand-woven linen or linsey-woolsey ground, and later framed under glass for protection.

Authentication involves examining the fibre content, type of weave in the backing linen, natural fading of the threads, stitch uniformity, and the style of the framing, which often shows signs of age such as hand-blown glass or old wood.

They work well as focal points on gallery walls, in traditional studies, or paired with minimalist decor to create a deliberate contrast between historic craftsmanship and contemporary clean lines.

Samplers should be kept away from direct sunlight to prevent thread fading and should be displayed in environments with controlled humidity and temperature to protect the delicate historical fibres.
