Delft pottery, or delftware, originated in the Netherlands during the 16th century, heavily influenced by imported Chinese porcelain brought by the Dutch East India Company. Potters in Delft mastered tin-glazed earthenware to replicate the prized blue and white aesthetic, creating distinctive decorative and utilitarian objects.

Traditional delft jars are constructed from buff-coloured earthenware clay shaped on a potters wheel. The vessel is then coated in an opaque white tin glaze, hand-painted with metallic oxide pigments (primarily cobalt blue for the signature colour), and fired at high temperatures.

Authentic antique delftware exhibits characteristic signs of age, such as crazing in the glaze, minor glaze flakes (fritting) along the foot rims or edges, and subtle variations in hand-painted brushwork. The underside often reveals potters marks and the porous nature of older earthenware bodies.

These decorative vessels can be displayed on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or open shelving to introduce classic pattern and historic texture into a modern space. Their bold cobalt blue motifs pair well with neutral palettes, natural wood tones, and minimalist surroundings.

Antique ceramics should be kept away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent further glaze crazing. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid using water or chemical cleaning agents on pieces with vulnerable historic surfaces or repaired areas.
