FAQs

Victorian furniture spans the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, characterised by a revival of historical epochs combined with industrial manufacturing techniques. Common features include rich dark woods, intricate carvings, and sturdy proportions that reflect the craftsmanship of the period.

Cabinet makers during the Victorian era predominantly utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and rosewood. Secondary woods like pine or oak were frequently used for drawer linings and internal framing.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails in the drawer construction. Look for natural ageing indicators including timber shrinkage, oxidisation, and tool marks consistent with nineteenth-century hand tools.

Pairing a dark wood antique table with modern minimalist decor creates a striking focal point. Use the surface for functional display with a contemporary lamp or ceramic vase to balance old and new aesthetics.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting. Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth and apply occasional high-quality beeswax to nourish the wood.
