Description

Large Size William Moorcroft England bowl. Smokey blue back ground with the traditional all closed pomegranate design decoration. Decorated both inside and outside. Fully marked to the base dating this piece between 1928 and 1930. The condition is basically very good with no repairs or chips but there is a minute hairline crack near the rim which you can hardly see.

Designed by William Moorcroft in the early twentieth century, the Pomegranate pattern became one of the factorys most recognized motifs. Characterised by rich cobalt backgrounds and tube-lined fruit, it exemplifies the naturalistic aesthetic of the Arts and Crafts movement.

Moorcroft ceramics are crafted from earthenware clay and decorated using liquid clay slip applied via liquid piping, known as tube-lining or slip-trailing. Hand-applied metallic oxide glazes are then applied before firing to create vibrant, layered colours.

Authentic pieces feature impressed factory stamps on the base alongside hand-painted initials or full signatures of William Moorcroft. Early examples from the 1910s to 1920s often display clear impression marks, painter marks, and distinctive crazing within the heavy lead glaze.
