Description

A fine first period Worcester porcelain ribbed / fluted tea bowl and saucer painted in the oriental inspired "Dragon In Compartments" pattern (also known as the "Kylin" or "Bengal Tiger" pattern), depicting, as you may expect, a dragon and a kylin in opposing panels, separated by panels showing precious objects and vases on stands. All painted in bright enamels in orange-red, pale green, puce, yellow and violet blue with gilt accents and gilt rims. Unmarked, c.1770.

The saucer measures 13.7cm (5 3/8") and 2.8cm (1 1/8") high and the tea bowl is 8cm (3 1/8") wide and 4.7cm (1 7/8") high.

In excellent condition with no damage, repair or restoration and very minor handling wear, a tiny amount of rubbing to the gilt on the tea bowl rim at the highest points and some minor rubbing to the enamelling to the centre of the saucer, again just to some of the higher points of the fluting.

Eighteenth-century Worcester porcelain refers to fine ceramics produced by the Worcester Porcelain Manufactory, established in 1751, known for high-quality body pastes and sophisticated enamelling.

Early Worcester pieces typically utilised a soaprock-infused porcelain paste that offered thermal shock resistance, decorated with hand-painted overglaze enamels and gilding inspired by Chinese export porcelain.

Authenticity is identified through paste characteristics under magnification, glaze pooling, specific period marks such as open or filled crescents, and the characteristic palette of hand-applied iron red, green, and blue enamels.

Antique porcelain adds historic depth and colour when displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, on open shelving, or as focal points on sideboards alongside contemporary minimalist objects.

Antique porcelain should be washed exclusively by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding soaking, dishwashers, and abrasive materials to protect fragile hand-painted surfaces and gilding.
