Wax Slaves Diorama

19th century
Description

A very unusual 19th century diorama, depicting slaves on a plantation. One of the slaves is pushing a wheelbarrow of plants, the other is carrying a basket of fruit/veg on his head and there is a little dog snapping at their feet. The figures are made of wax, with cotton and velum clothing. The diorama is contained in a hexagonal glass ebony case with ebony feet and finial.
