Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large nineteenth-century bureau de plat desk follows the Louis XV Revival style. Constructed from warm brown walnut veneer, kingwood and satinwood, the piece includes an inset leather writing top framed by a gilt bronze ormolu border and corner mounts. Three frieze drawers sit along the front, fitted with elaborate cast ormolu handles, while cabriole legs terminate in decorative gilt sabots. The desk stands 79 cm high, 178 cm wide, and 86 cm deep. Position this substantial writing table in a home study, library, or executive office as a central working surface. The configuration offers generous legroom and surface area for administrative tasks, while the decorative gilt bronze mounts and veneered finish suit traditional interior settings.

FAQs

A bureau plat is a French flat-topped writing table featuring frieze drawers beneath the writing surface, designed to sit in the centre of a room rather than against a wall.

These desks are typically constructed from fine hardwoods such as walnut, kingwood, or tulipwood, decorated with gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and finished with a leather writing top.

Authentic pieces display hand-chiselled gilt-bronze mounts, hand-cut dovetail joints on frieze drawers, and natural age patination across the wood veneer and leather insert.

Position the desk freestanding in a study or library space to highlight its finished rear profile and decorative corner mounts.

Dust the wood veneer and gilt-bronze mounts regularly with a soft dry cloth, and treat the leather writing surface with a specialist wax polish to prevent drying or cracking.
