Victorian furniture spans the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, characterised by a revival of historical styles including Gothic, Elizabethan, and Rococo, alongside exceptional craftsmanship in dense timbers like walnut and mahogany.

Cabinet makers typically utilised solid secondary woods like pine or mahogany as a carcase, overlaid with highly figured veneers such as burr walnut. Traditional joinery techniques, hand-carved decorative elements, and sturdy stretcher bases were standard practice during this period.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct construction markers such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional shellac polish finishes, natural timber shrinkage, and appropriate wear consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturing methods.

Pairing a historic wooden table with contemporary upholstery or minimalist decor creates a sophisticated contrast, allowing the rich grain and intricate carvings to serve as a focal point in the room.

Maintain antique timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking. Apply microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the wood and protect the polish without causing build-up.
