19th Century encased paper model of an Indian grocery store Quite simple this is an amazing decorative object, encased in a 19th century glass and pine display, a handmade paper model of an Indian grocery shop, with wooden hand painted elephant and working man at the steps. Spencer and Co of Madras became one of the largest department stores in India, after becoming a Limited company in 1897. This model would likely have been commissioned to take pride of place in one of their department stores or the head office. The weathered and aged effect which has taken place over the years is what makes this model so amazing, it now resembles a ruined, abandoned architectural relic of days gone by with a haunting presence.
