Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This set of five 19th-century Japanese Meiji sencha trays is crafted from natural wood with a warm brown colour and a visible wood grain. Each shallow circular serving tray features a raised rim and low-relief landscape carving depicting historical Japanese buildings and bridges on the inner surface. The timber has a polished finish showing a smooth patina across the stacked surfaces. The set includes five matching circular items measuring 3.5 cm in height and 23.5 cm in width. These traditional wooden trays are designed for use during the Japanese tea ceremony and serve as functional tableware or decorative display pieces. Placed upon a sideboard top or dining table, they add a touch of historical craftsmanship to contemporary home interiors. The set functions well as a collection of individual serving dishes or as a stacked decorative arrangement when not in use for serving tea and light refreshments.

FAQs

Sencha tea trays are shallow wooden or lacquered vessels designed specifically for serving loose-leaf green tea during traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. Originating in the Edo and Meiji periods, these trays were crafted to hold cups, pots, and accessories while featuring low-relief carved decorations.

Meiji era trays were primarily carved from indigenous Japanese timbers such as keyaki (zelkova), cherry wood, or cedar. Craftsmen used precision hand-carving techniques to create delicate relief scenes, often finished with natural oils or light lacquer to accentuate the wood grain.

Authentic Meiji trays exhibit hand-tool marks beneath the finish, smooth natural wear along the edges, and subtle variations between individual pieces in a set. Traditional hand-carved relief work features asymmetry, depth, and motifs characteristic of Japanese landscape art.

These shallow trays work well displayed on a sideboard, coffee table, or shelving unit as decorative catchalls or sculptural bases. Grouping a set together highlights the collective woodwork, while single trays provide contrast against contemporary stone or glass surfaces.

Clean wooden trays using a soft, dry cloth to remove dust from carved recesses without introducing moisture. Avoid liquid polishers, water exposure, or harsh detergents, and apply a light coating of natural beeswax polish periodically to keep the timber hydrated.
