ANTIQUE #SA1029561
a nineteenth century silhouette of a young gentleman - CATEGORY: ANTIQUE MISCELLANEOUS - DATED 19TH CENTURY

A Nineteenth Century Silhouette Of A Young Gentleman

£135    $171    €162
A full length nineteenth century paper cut of a young gentleman in a glazed gilt frame. In very good condition (just a little wear to the frame to the right as shown).

Silhouettes were very popular during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century - 1790-1840. The earliest professional silhouettists were portrait miniaturists. Silhouettes became an affordable way for people to have portraits made. They were made by using a light source to cast a shadow.

The name silhouette can be traced back to the mid eighteenth century French finance minister, Etienne de Silhouette. This is because he liked making silhouettes himself and his name became synonymous with doing things cheaply.

The invention of photography signalled the end of the silhouette as a popular form of portraiture.
