This nineteenth-century folk art drinking vessel is shaped from a dark brown coconut shell and features detailed relief carvings. The upper section has a fluted carved cap above a rope-twist border pattern that encloses the main circular scene. Within this border, a relief carved hunter points forward alongside five hounds, with a countryside scene in the background. The base possesses a rounded contour, and the entire surface shows visible hand-carved texturing throughout the figural elements and background foliage. Measuring 12.5 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 5 cm deep, this pocket-sized decorative piece sits neatly on a bookshelf or desk within a gentleman's library or study today, adding an element of historical folk art craftsmanship to an interior display.

Carved coconut vessels, often referred to as bugbear nuts or sailors folk art, were decorative and utilitarian objects crafted predominantly during the 18th and 19th centuries. Artisans and sailors carved the exterior shell into drinking cups, flasks, and tobacco containers, decorating them with intricate relief motifs.

Artisans harvested mature coconut shells, dried them, and smoothed the exterior before hand-carving detailed designs using small chisels or gouges. The natural oils and handling over time cause the dark fibrous material to develop a rich, smooth surface finish.

Authentic period examples display genuine surface patina, subtle hand-tooling variations within the carving, and organic irregular thickness across the shell walls. Micro-cracking and natural darkening around high-touch areas further indicate historical age.

Display the piece upright on a glass-fronted cabinet shelf, a dark timber desk, or layered among books to highlight its carved detail. Pairing the dark organic material with polished brass, stone, or leather creates a sophisticated display.

Keep the object in a stable climate free from direct heat sources and drastic humidity fluctuations, which can induce shell cracking. Dust gently with a soft dry brush and apply a tiny amount of natural microcrystalline wax occasionally to protect the shell.
