Morris and Co Style Mahogany Occasional Table

1900 - 1920
Description

An elegant arts and crafts mahogany occasional table or centre table in the style of Morris and Co, c1900, the six slender legs united by curved stretchers and a central round shelf, with a shaped top.

his beautifully proportioned table is reminiscent of the furniture designed by George Washington Jack for Morris and Co in the late 19th century. The table has no marks and I haven’t been able to identify the manufacturer, but have seen another table of the same design listed as ‘attributed to Morris and Co’.

Condition: The table is overall in very good condition with a few very small scuffs and marks to the legs, and a small dint in the edge of the top. I think the top has probably been refinished as it has no signs of wear.

The maximum width of the table is 78cm across the legs - across the top it measures 74.5cm in diameter.

Mainland UK delivery (excluding the Scottish highlands) is included in the price - if you would like a quote for delivery elsewhere, or if you would like to collect the item yourself, please get in touch. Delivery of furniture usually takes between 7 and 21 days from order, though can sometimes take longer. If you need an item by a certain date please speak to us prior to ordering and we’ll try to help.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Arts and Crafts furniture emerged in late nineteenth-century Britain as a movement emphasising traditional craftsmanship, visible joinery, and natural materials. Designs rejected mass industrial production in favour of simplified forms, functional structural elements, and organic decorative motifs.

Cabinetmakers during this era predominantly utilized solid hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, walnut, and rosewood. Construction relied on traditional mortise and tenon joints, hand-carved aprons, and polished natural timber finishes.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-finished undersides, original patination in recessed areas, hand-cut joinery, and proportions consistent with turn-of-the-century design. Markings from makers, stamps, or specific hardware designs also aid identification.

A small dark wood occasional table provides architectural interest when paired alongside upholstered seating or positioned within a reading corner. Its compact footprint allows functional surface space for lighting and decorative objects without overwhelming modern room layouts.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish annually. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, cracking, or surface discolouration.
