Flemish 17th Century Carved Oak Table

17th century
Description

Flemish 17th century carved oak table circa 1690.

We are pleased to offer this 17th century table which was often called a rent table.

Over-sailing solid oak top which has now been restored with a piece let in and areas of colour matched fill.  top secured to base with pegs.  single drawer to the front with working lock and key.  raised on 4 hand carved legs, supported by a near floor level stretcher.

When cleaning this piece back we found the original colour to the painted base.  evidence of metal support restoration to the side of the top which must be 200 years old itself.

Ideal for use in a period home in multiple rooms around the home, would also work well as a one off piece in a modern interior.

Expected surface marks and shrinkage for a table over 300 years old.  restoration to top surface to old historical age splits.  strong and sturdy, ready for everyday use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Flemish furniture from the 17th century is defined by Baroque influences, heavy oak construction, and architectural elements. Common features include turned baluster legs, deep mouldings, geometrical panel design, and sturdy box stretchers.

Solid European oak was the predominant timber utilised for Flemish tables during this era. Joinery relied on wooden pegs, mortise and tenon joints, and hand-forged iron hardware for drawer locks and handles.

Authentic period pieces display hand-sawn timber marks, irregular pegged joinery, and natural shrinkage across wood grain surfaces. Look for historical wear on foot stretchers and original patination within carved crevices.

Position the piece as an accent table alongside contemporary upholstered seating to create a visual contrast. Balance the dark oak patina with neutral textiles, modern ceramic lamps, or minimal decorative objects.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish annually along the wood grain. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent wood movement and splitting.
