Description

? An early 19th Century black and gilt chinoiserie marble top side/console table. The Greek green marble top above a cushion frame frieze with exaggerated cabriole legs and stylised paw feet. The whole in the original chinoiserie decoration of intertwined dragons with opposing fighting warriors. Circa 1820. In good condition, structurally sound, the marble with no breaks, chips or marks.

Regency Chinoiserie furniture reflects an early nineteenth-century European fascination with East Asian artistic traditions. Pieces typically feature ebonised or lacquered wood adorned with hand-painted gold scenes, stylized landscapes, cabriole or turned legs, and marble tops.

These tables were commonly framed in solid hardwoods such as oak or beech, finished with ebonised paint or lacquered gilding (japanning), and fitted with heavy natural marble slabs, such as vert antique or grey marble.
