This Victorian gentleman's library inkwell takes the form of an actual horse's hoof, mounted with polished brass and silver. The front is decorated with individual silver letters spelling out the name "NICK NACK", positioned above a shaped brass shoe at the base. Naturalistic chased brass detailing imitates hair along the top rim, while a flat brass lid caps the piece, complemented by dark brown natural horn tones showing organic grain and darker mottled markings throughout the exterior hoof wall. The piece measures 9 cm high, 10.5 cm wide, and 14 cm deep. On an office desk or study table today, this inkwell serves as a striking decorative desk accessory or working ink receptacle. It adds historical character to a traditional workspace, bringing tactile organic textures and equestrian heritage into interior schemes focused on period antiques.

Popular in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, horse hoof inkwells were created as sentimental keepsakes to honour favourite riding or military horses after their death, converting the hoof into a functional desk accessory.

These items were crafted using a real preserved horse hoof, fitted with brass or sterling silver mounts, a hinged metal cap, a brass shoe base, and an internal removable glass ink liner.

Authentic pieces feature natural horn texture with age-related surface shrinkage, hand-fitted metal shoes and lids, period metal hallmarks or stampings, and often period inscriptions or names applied to the mount.

Position the piece on a wooden writing desk, alongside leather-bound books on a gentlemans library shelf, or within a curated cabinet of curiosities to add visual history to the room.

Keep the item in a stable climate away from direct sunlight or central heating to prevent cracking of the organic hoof material, and clean the metal fittings using dedicated metal polish applied carefully with a soft cloth.
