Antique Folk Art Whirligig Sailor Signalman

1900 - 1920
Description

A charming and decorative folk art carved and painted wooden whirligig toy, in the form of a maritime signalman in blue uniform holding a pair of red and white signal flags made from sheet metal. He is mounted on a bun shaped wooden base, and his arms spin around to wave the flags.

This is great fun and a very attractive decorative item, which I believe dates to the early 20th century.

Condition: There are areas of general wear and tear, such as chips and loss to the paint. The flag in his right hand has been reattached with glue. The arms rotate freely and he stands securely on his base.

The maximum height, including the raised flag, is 43cm.
