Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

18th-century Portuguese tables frequently feature heavy baroque influences, characterised by elaborate turned legs, spiral stretchers, rich native or imported hardwoods such as rosewood, and decorative pierced brass mounts.

Craftsmen predominantly utilised dense tropical hardwoods like Brazilian rosewood and kingwood, paired with hand-forged brass escutcheons, mounts, and iron drawer runners.

Authentic pieces display distinct hand-planed surfaces, hand-cut dovetail joinery in drawer construction, slightly asymmetrical hand-turned spiral legs, and patinated brass fittings consistent with historical metallurgy.

Position the piece as a focal point in an entryway or living space, balancing its rich timber tones and sculptural turned legs against clean-lined modern artwork and neutral walls.

Maintain the original finish by applying a thin coat of high-quality beeswax annually, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and keeping the furniture away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity.
