This large nineteenth-century Victorian jug combines coopered oak staves with polished brass hardware in a rustic farmhouse style. The dark brown timber body is secured by four bright gold brass binding hoops, complemented by a shaped swept brass top spout and a sturdy curved loop handle attached to the side. Visible details include the vertical wooden staves forming the barrel-like vessel and metal fixings around the exterior. The piece measures 58.5 cm high, 25.5 cm wide, and 25.5 cm deep. In a modern interior, the sturdy vessel sits practically beside a fireplace hearth or functions well as an umbrella and walking stick stand in a hallway. The warm combination of timber and metal brings traditional craftsmanship into domestic spaces for daily utility or decorative display.

A coopered oak jug is a pouring vessel constructed using traditional barrel-making techniques, where wooden staves are shaped and bound together with metal hoops. Popular during the 19th century, these jugs were used for storing and serving liquids such as ale or cider, or repurposed as hearth decor.

Coopered vessels are primarily constructed from hardwoods such as oak, elm, or chestnut, which offer durability and water resistance. The staves are held tightly in place by brass or iron binding hoops, often paired with a polished brass rim and handle.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-fitted timber staves showing natural age patina, historic copper or brass rivets on the metal bands, and signs of traditional hand-finishing along the spout and handle joins. Stamped maker marks or registry diamonds may also be present on the metalwork.

This type of vessel functions well as a focal accent beside a fireplace, positioned on a large sideboard, or used as an umbrella or dried flower holder in an entryway. The contrast between warm timber and reflective metal complements both rustic farmhouse and traditional country house decor.

Keep the piece in an environment with stable humidity to prevent the wooden staves from shrinking or cracking. Dust the timber regularly with a soft cloth and apply a neutral beeswax polish to protect the wood, while lightly buffing the brass bands with a dry microfibre cloth.
