Parian Figurine of a Girl with a Basket, Xix Century

19th century
Description

This charming 19th century parian figurine depicts a girl gracefully carrying a basket of flowers and fruit on her shoulder. The statuette is skillfully executed, although its maker is hard to identify as any branding that may have been present on the base has worn down over time. Based on its style and the design of the stand, it might be a product of Minton.

The figurine is likely to have been crafted in the mid-19th century, as suggested by the firing marks visible on the girl's neck and left forearm. It's important to remember that antique British porcelain, especially from the 1800s when kilns were fired with coal, often exhibits these sorts of firing marks due to airborne particles. Additionally, British manufacturers' penchant for experimentation at the time sometimes resulted in technical imperfections in the porcelain.

This particular figurine showcases a high level of craftsmanship, especially in the detailing of the girl's face, the basket, and the floral garland adorning her head. A unique feature for a parian piece is the girl's colored hair, carefully painted by the artist, with its red hue harmonizing perfectly with the marble-white figure. Her face is delicately decorated in soft pastel colors, signifying the hand of a true master.

The figurine stands at a height of 33 cm. Apart from the aforementioned firing lines on the neck and left forearm, there's a small chip on the lower edge of the base and minor damage to the flowers in the basket. These minor flaws, however, do not detract from the overall appeal and charm of this beautiful piece.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Parian ware is a type of unglazed biscuit porcelain developed in Britain during the 1840s, designed to imitate hand-carved white Parian marble in a cast ceramic format.

Parian figures were crafted using a feldspathic porcelain body with a high proportion of frit, slip-cast into plaster moulds and fired to create a translucent, matte finish.

Authentic pieces feature a silken matte surface texture, crisp moulded detail, faint translucency under light, and subtle seam lines from multi-part production moulds.

A Parian figurine can be placed on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or within a curated bookcase alongside contemporary art to create a contrast between traditional and modern aesthetics.

Dust regularly with a soft dry brush, and clean deeper grime using warm water and mild detergent on a microfiber cloth while avoiding harsh chemical solvents.
