Description

A grand painted terracotta bust of the charming Madame Du Barry, this large and heavy piece is after the artist Augustin Pajou and is inscribed on the reverse “Portrait De Madame La Comtesse Du Bary Par Pajou Secul Du Roy E. Professeur De Son Acad De Pint E Scul 1773”. The beautiful Jeanne Bécu, Comtesse du Barry, was the last chief mistress of King Louis XV of France and lived at Versailles. She was executed by guillotine during the French Revolution. This wonderful bust has been painted to give it the appearance of bronze and will make a handsome addition to a grand room.

Dating to circa 1900, this is made of painted terracotta and originates from France.

In good age related condition, this has only two very minor nibbles to the terracotta along an edge at the back, revealing the colour of the clay, but these are small and the piece is in generally nice condition.

Neoclassical portrait busts emerged in Europe during the mid-to-late 18th century, drawing inspiration from classical Greek and Roman sculptural traditions to emphasise proportion, restraint, and idealized human form.

Sculptors traditionally shaped terracotta by hand or cast it in moulds using refined clay, which was then fired at high temperatures and frequently finished with patination or paint to simulate bronze or stone.

Authentic period pieces typically exhibit consistent surface wear, appropriate tool marks, historical patination, and firing characteristics consistent with 18th- or 19th-century ceramic production methods.

Pairing a classical sculptural bust with clean-lined modern furniture and neutral backdrops creates a striking focal point, balancing historic gravitas with minimalist aesthetics.

Keep terracotta objects in stable indoor environments away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity, dusting gently with a soft, dry brush without applying liquid cleaning agents.
