The Regency style emerged in early 19th-century Britain, drawing heavy inspiration from classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian architecture, characterised by clean lines, classical proportions, and sophisticated use of exotic veneers.

Craftsmen typically utilized a sturdy secondary timber like pine or mahogany as a carcase, overlaid with prized decorative veneers such as satinwood, rosewood, and ebony stringing, often finished with tooled leather or baize playing surfaces.

Authentication involves examining construction methods such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional timber shrinkage patterns, the presence of old polish, and authentic patination on secondary woods that indicate early 19th-century manufacture.

This piece works effectively as a console or occasional table against a wall in a living room or study, contrasting cleanly with contemporary upholstery and minimal decor to highlight its historic craftsmanship.

Maintain wood furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting, and treat periodically with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes to protect the historic finish.
