FAQs

Gateleg tables gained popularity in England during the seventeenth century, particularly during the Jacobean and Commonwealth periods, as a space-saving solution for smaller rooms.

These tables are traditionally constructed from solid English oak, featuring pegged mortise and tenon joints, hinged drop leaves, and pivoting gate legs to support the flaps.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-planed surfaces, irregular tool marks, period-appropriate timber shrinkage, original hinges, and centuries of natural patination rather than machine tooling.

This piece can serve as a functional dining table or a console in a hallway, contrasting effectively against minimalist modern decor to add texture, warmth, and historical interest.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the wood.
