Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Worn gilding on the high points: rubbing from decades of handling.
Jet-black lustrous glaze: Victorian blackware produced across Shropshire and Staffordshire.
Hand-lined gilt border along the base: decoration done before modern machine transfer.
Moulded tail forming the handle: functional design typical of nineteenth-century creamers.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This mid-nineteenth century English Victorian Jackfield pottery cow creamer is made from earthenware with a black glaze and sparse gilt decoration. The patient creature stands on an integral oval base with a loop handle tail, a removable back lid, and three stilt marks. Traces of gilding highlight the edges, horns, and surface, alongside visible wear on the black gloss finish. The piece measures 12 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 8.5 cm deep. Suitable for display atop a sideboard in an English country house setting, this milk jug brings period character to a dining room or kitchen. The figural creamer integrates easily into a collection of antique ceramics or stands alone as a decorative accent.

FAQs

Jackfield pottery refers to red earthenware ceramics coated in a dark, glossy black glaze, produced in Shropshire and Staffordshire during the 18th and 19th centuries.

These creamers were moulded from earthenware clay with a hollow interior filled via a fitted lid on the back, utilizing the looped tail as a handle and dispensing liquid through the open mouth.

Authentic pieces feature a dark ceramic body underneath a thick black glaze, often decorated with cold-painted gilt detailing that demonstrates historic surface wear.

Position the vessel on a sideboard, dresser shelf, or kitchen counter alongside contemporary ceramics to add contrast and texture to modern displays.

Clean gently by hand using warm water and mild soap, avoiding abrasive pads or chemicals that could wear down delicate gold leaf or glaze surface treatments.
