FAQs

French marquetry developed significantly during the 17th and 18th centuries, becoming a hallmark of royal and elite craftsmanship, particularly associated with the ateliers of Paris and the Louis XIV to Louis XVI periods.

Marquetry involves applying finely cut veneers of various hardwoods, fruitwoods, and exotic timbers onto a carcase, often combined with stringing, banding, and hand-cut geometric or pictorial motifs.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-cut veneers with slight irregularities, natural patination of the timber, traditional joinery methods such as mortise and tenon, and old animal glue rather than modern adhesives.

An antique marquetry table can serve as an elegant focal point in a contemporary setting by pairing it with minimalist seating or placing it against a neutral wall to highlight the intricate wood grain and craftsmanship.

Protect antique wooden tables from direct sunlight, maintain stable indoor humidity and temperature levels to prevent veneer lifting, and clean only with a soft, dry cloth without applying modern silicone-based polishes.
