These Edwardian opera glasses from around 1900 belong to the Belle Epoque style, designed as a portable viewing instrument for theatre and social gatherings. The construction combines polished brass barrels with iridescent amber-coloured mother-of-pearl casing panels, glass lenses, and a central brass focus wheel. Distinctive hardware includes an extendable lorgnette handle attached by a jointed hinge, turned circular mouldings around the eye-pieces, and a twin-bar bridge holding the optical tubes together. Engravings decorate the brass rims and frame components. Folded measurements stand at 4.4 cm high, 11.4 cm wide, and 4.8 cm deep. Today, this piece serves as a decorative collectible in a gentleman's library or study environment. It finds a practical home displayed upon a bookshelf, desk top, or within a glass display cabinet, offering an authentic touch of early twentieth-century elegance to interior spaces. Collectors can place it upright or resting flat among books and small curiosities, bringing historical charm to a modern domestic setting.

Opera glasses equipped with an extendable or folding side handle are traditionally referred to as lorgnettes. This design allowed theatre patrons to view performances comfortably without holding the optics directly to the face for extended periods.

Turn-of-the-century French opera glasses were predominantly constructed using cast and polished brass mechanisms, optical glass lenses, and decorative barrel casings made from mother of pearl, enamel, or tortoiseshell.

Authentic pieces from around 1900 typically feature smooth screw-threaded assembly, makers marks etched around the eyepieces, iridescent natural mother of pearl panels, and central focus wheels made of polished brass or bone.

These decorative instruments are frequently styled on stacked books, inside glass display cabinets, or atop writing desks alongside vintage brass objects to add texture and historical interest to a room.

Clean the brass components using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove fingerprints and prevent tarnish. Avoid applying harsh liquid chemical cleaners near the mother of pearl veneers or optical glass elements.
