Description

Super large early 1900's Scottish Wemyss ware pail with the original handle and the original lid in the famous cabbage roses design. The pail itself is in good condition apart froma small hairline and it has its original handle but the original inner lid has been repaired some time ago. The pail has both the impressed Wemyss mark underneath and the London retailors mark. The original inner lid is almost always missing on these so to have it on this example even though it has been repaired is not common.

Wemyss Ware is a type of Scottish pottery originally produced by the Fife pottery of Robert Heron and Son in Kirkcaldy from the late 19th century onwards, known for its distinctive hand-painted fruit and floral designs.

Wemyss pieces are crafted from earthenware clay, hand-painted under a clear glaze with vibrant pigments, and often feature molded or applied ceramic elements alongside woven cane handles.

Authentic pieces typically bear impressed factory marks, retailer stamps such as Thomas Goode & Co., and exhibit characteristic thick, tactile hand-painted brushwork with a distinctively glossy glaze.

These decorative vessels can be used as standalone display pieces on sideboards, integrated into floral arrangements, or utilized to hold dried botanicals within traditional or transitional spaces.

Maintain antique ceramics by dusting gently with a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or submersion in water, and keeping them out of direct sunlight to protect the hand-painted glazes.
