A dissected puzzle is an early precursor to the modern jigsaw puzzle, popular in the 18th and 19th centuries as an educational tool for children to learn geography, history, and genealogy.

Early dissected puzzles were typically crafted from mahogany, cedar, or pine, with hand-coloured paper lithographs or engravings mounted directly onto the wood before being hand-cut with a fretsaw.

Authenticity is determined by hand-cut interlocking or straight-line puzzle pieces showing signs of age such as wood shrinkage, hand-applied paper lithographs, and original dovetailed or slide-lid wooden boxes.

This piece can be displayed flat on a coffee table under glass or placed upright on a bookshelf as a historical artefact, adding intellectual depth and curated charm to a room.

Preserve the puzzle by keeping it out of direct sunlight to prevent paper fading, maintaining stable room humidity to protect the wood, and handling pieces gently to avoid damaging fragile edges.
