Refectory tables originated in monastic dining halls during the medieval period, evolving through the 17th century with sturdier frames and distinctive turned legs to accommodate communal dining.

These tables are traditionally constructed from solid English oak, joined using pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-planed timber boards, and sturdy floor-level stretchers for stability.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate tool marks, hand-cut peg joints, natural shrinkage cracks, uneven board widths, and deep patination accumulated through centuries of use.

Pairing a heavy historic table with contemporary minimalist seating or sleek industrial lighting creates a balanced juxtaposition that highlights its architectural form.

Maintain antique oak by avoiding direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations, applying microcrystalline wax sparingly, and wiping surfaces with a dry, soft cloth.
