FAQs

The Sutherland table is a narrow form of drop-leaf table that originated in Victorian Britain, designed to occupy minimal space when folded down and easily expanded for tea or writing.

These tables were typically constructed from fine hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or burr walnut veneers, featuring hinged drop leaves supported by swing legs and often mounted on castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit period construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional wood shrinkage patterns, aged patina on the timber, and original brass or ceramic castors.

Its compact, versatile footprint makes it suitable as a compact coffee table or an occasional surface in a living room, adding textural warmth and historical contrast to contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying a specialist beeswax polish to maintain the finish.
