This late Georgian period dining table takes the form of a heavy quality mahogany drop-leaf extending table from circa 1800. It is rendered in a warm brown timber with a polished finish and displays natural signs of age including surface wear and historical scratches across the top and leaves. The rectangular top has dropped leaves with curved ends and a traditional rule joint, raised on turned legs finished with brass castors. Practical dimensions measure 74 cm high, 122 cm wide, and 188 cm deep when open. Suitable for daily dining use in a home, the table opens to provide generous seating capacity for up to eight people. The sturdy pull-out action allows the leaves to drop down when space is needed or extend smoothly for meals and gatherings. It fits comfortably within an English country house interior or traditional dining room setting, pairing well with vintage chairs and surrounding period furniture.

Georgian drop-leaf dining tables were designed during the 18th and early 19th centuries to offer flexible space-saving solutions. They feature hinged side leaves supported by wooden gate-legs or swing-out brackets, allowing the table to expand for dining or fold down when positioned against a wall.

High-grade dense mahogany imported from the West Indies was the predominant wood choice due to its durability and fine grain. Craftspeople utilised mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved turned legs, solid brass hinges, and fitted brass castors to allow smooth movement.

Authentic period examples exhibit signs of hand-craftsmanship, such as hand-cut rule joints along the leaf edges and original steel or brass screws. Look for natural oxidisation on the timber underside, subtle shrinkage along grain lines, and original brass castors showing historical wear.

Balance the deep mahogany tones by pairing the table with lightweight contemporary chairs, such as upholstered dining seats or minimalist timber frames. Set the table with simple linen runners and modern ceramic tableware to create a subtle contrast between historical woodwork and clean modern lines.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, buffing along the grain to protect the timber surface. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber warping or uneven fading, and ensure hinges remain free of dust.
