FAQs

The Aesthetic Movement, spanning roughly from the 1860s to the 1900s, prioritised art for arts sake, often featuring clean architectural lines, Japanese-inspired motifs, and simplified forms contrasting with heavy Victorian ornamentation.

Cabinetmakers of this period predominantly used dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and ebonised fruitwood, frequently incorporating turned spindles and structural undershelves for stability.

Authentic pieces typically display period-appropriate joinery, traditional hand-applied finishes with natural patina, and timber shrinkage consistent with age rather than uniform modern machining.

This piece works effectively as an occasional surface where the lower tier provides functional space for books or ceramics, grounding the design while maintaining a light visual footprint.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a dry, soft cloth and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the timber, avoiding silicone sprays, direct sunlight, and excessive moisture.
