Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1750s:
Carved gadrooning to the turned vase stem: fine mid-18th-century turning.
Cabriole legs terminating in pad feet: classic mid-Georgian tripod design.
Solid mahogany circular top: dense imported timber with deep natural grain.
Scattered small dings and softened foot edges: decades of domestic use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This mid-eighteenth century Georgian centre table originates from around 1750 and is formed of rich brown mahogany with a polished finish. The design incorporates a circular tilt top supported by a turned pedestal stem featuring ring turnings and a vase shape above gadrooned moulding, terminating in three cabriole legs ending in pad feet. The timber exhibits pronounced natural figuring across the surface. Measuring 70 cm high, 91 cm wide and 91 cm deep, the table provides a practical surface for display in an empty corner or seating area of a living room or reception space in a traditional or modern home.

Mid-18th century tripod tables are circular occasional tables characterised by a central turned pedestal supported by three cabriole legs. Popularised during the Georgian era, they were primarily designed for flexible placement in reception rooms for serving tea or displaying objects.

These tables were most commonly crafted from solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for its density, rich grain structure, and durability. The underlying support mechanisms and block structures occasionally incorporated native hardwoods such as oak or pine.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of period craftsmanship, such as hand-cut dovetails on the leg-to-pedestal joins, hand-turned column profiles, and natural timber shrinkage leading to slightly oval tops. Dark oxidisation and wear consistent with age on the underside of the base also indicate genuine age.

A mahogany tripod table functions well as an occasional side table beside contemporary seating, in a hallway alcove, or positioned in an empty corner. Its compact footprint and elevated stem allow it to blend seamlessly into modern, eclectic, or traditional room layouts.

Preserve the original finish by applying a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year, buffing gently with a soft cloth. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber warping and excessive fading of the patina.
