This Victorian card table displays a warm brown burr walnut timber finish with a distinctive serpentine-shaped fold-over top. The piece dates from 1860 and showcases detailed craftsmanship through a carved bulbous pedestal, four scrolled cabriole legs, and brass castors. The top swivels and lifts to reveal a baize-lined interior with cross-banded edging, supported by a turned base finial. Measuring 75 cm high, 92 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, the table fits comfortably into an English country house interior. Placed beside the front door, it offers a welcoming surface for post or keys, while its folding top provides practical flexibility for occasional use as a decorative console or a display table in a hallway or reception room.

FAQs

A Victorian walnut card table is a mid-to-late 19th-century piece of furniture designed for playing card games. It features a swivel or fold-over top that expands to reveal a larger playing surface, often lined with felt or baize.

These tables were typically crafted from solid timbers such as mahogany or walnut, frequently accented with decorative burr walnut veneers, inlaid marquetry, cast brass hinges, and woven baize linings.

Authentic pieces generally display period joinery techniques, such as hand-cut dovetails inside internal storage compartments, authentic age-related patina on the timber, swivel mechanisms with brass hinges, and carved pedestal bases.

When closed, the table functions as a console table or hall table placed against a wall, topped with lamps or decorative ceramics. It can be unfolded and moved into the centre of a room when extra surface space or gaming functionality is required.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer cracking or movement. Clean the timber using a soft dry cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly to preserve the finish; keep liquids away from the delicate playing surface.
