This Georgian country chestnut tilt-top table is a side table designed in a Country Georgian style. It has a warm brown colour, a visible wood grain across the circular top, and stands on cabriole tripod legs terminating in pad feet. The piece features a turned central pedestal supporting a birdcage swivel mechanism that allows the top to tilt, whilst a wooden peg holds the assembly in place. Surface wear and a developed patina are visible on the timber. Practical for everyday use in a modern home, this table fits well at the end of a sofa or in a corner of a living room or study. It measures 86 cm in diameter and 71 cm high, providing a convenient surface for a lamp, book or cup while taking up minimal floor space.

Developed in the eighteenth century, a tilt-top table features a circular or oval wooden top attached to a central pedestal via a hinged mechanism, allowing the surface to tilt vertically to save space when not in use.

These tables were typically built from solid hardwoods such as chestnut, oak, or mahogany. Construction involved hand-turned central columns, iron or timber latches, and splayed tripod legs joined to the base column with wooden dowels or dovetail joints.

Authentic period examples display hand-saw marks on the underside of the top timber, hand-forged iron latches or wooden birdcage blocks, and evidence of hand-carving on the pedestal column and tripod feet.

A country tilt-top table functions effectively as an occasional surface positioned beside an armchair, placed in an entryway corner, or positioned with the top tilted vertically flat against a wall to highlight the timber grain.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying a coat of beeswax annually, while keeping the table away from direct radiators and moist environments to prevent timber movement.
