Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian Burmantofts Faience jardiniere and matching pedestal stand complete the decorative ceramic set, finished in a rich ochre yellow glaze. Deeply moulded relief patterns show scrolling acanthus leaves and foliage across the flared vessel, while the supporting column features a fluted design with a circular stepped base and moulded rim. The ceramic construction has a uniform glossy finish with subtle tonal variations visible across the curved surfaces. Standing at 121 cm high, 37 cm wide, and 37 cm deep, the ensemble possesses a substantial vertical presence suited to floor placement. In a contemporary interior, this jardiniere and pedestal combination serves as a striking focal point positioned in a bright bay window or a sunlit conservatory. The interior opening at the top accommodates potted plants or floral arrangements, bringing height and structured Victorian design into a living space or hallway. The durable glazed earthenware construction allows for straightforward placement on solid flooring surfaces, combining decorative utility with traditional nineteenth-century ceramic craftsmanship.

FAQs

Burmantofts faience refers to glazed architectural terra-cotta and art pottery manufactured by the Burmantofts Company in Leeds, England, predominantly between 1880 and 1904. The pottery is renowned for its monochrome lead glazes, relief moulding, and decorative botanical motifs.

Traditional Victorian jardinieres were predominantly constructed from earthenware or terracotta clay, shaped using moulds, and finished with translucent, coloured lead glazes. The pedestals were slip-cast or press-moulded in sections before firing.

Authentic pieces generally feature impressed marks on the underside, including the monogram BF (often with BURMANTOFTS FAIENCE), along with shape model numbers and occasionally glaze code stamps impressed directly into the clay.

Position the jardiniere in a bay window, entrance hall, or quiet corner to introduce height and texture. Pair the monochrome glazed surface with leafy indoor foliage such as ferns or palms to contrast with clean architectural lines.

Clean the surface gently using a soft, damp cloth and mild liquid soap, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners. To prevent damage from internal moisture, place a modern waterproof liner inside the ceramic bowl rather than planting directly into the vessel.
