This carved botanical artefact is an Aboriginal Australian tribal art piece dating from circa 1900. Fashioned from a dried boab nut and organic husk, it has a dark brown colour and displays incised geometric patterns, a botanical seed pod form, and a stippled carving technique. The outer surface features hand-carved depictions of local life, including fish and a large crab, alongside a tufted organic stem at one end. Measuring 14 cm high by 7.5 cm wide, the piece sits well in a gentleman's library theme. Positioned on a bookshelf, this decorative object brings texture and cultural history to a room interior. The organic shell form and intricate surface detailing suit display alongside leather-bound volumes and historical artefacts on open shelving. The compact scale permits placement within tight alcoves, on mantelpieces, or inside cabinet vitrines alongside other small curiosities.

Carved boab nuts originate predominantly from the Kimberley region of Western Australia, where Indigenous artists carve pictorial scenes, fauna, or traditional iconography into the dried shell of the Adansonia gregorii fruit.

These objects are created using the dried pericarp of the boab seed pod, with patterns incised using sharp tools to scrape away the dark outer layer and expose the lighter inner husk.

Authentic examples feature hand-engraved motifs carved directly through the natural outer coating, exhibiting characteristic organic variations in pod shape, stem remnants, and surface texture.

This tactile object can be presented on a custom metal display stand, placed within a glass cabinet of curiosities, or styled atop a stack of design books on a shelf.

Store the item in a stable environment away from direct sunlight, humidity, and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting the incised surface gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush.
