This Victorian dummy board stick stand is shaped as a cut-out profile of a young girl holding a spaniel dog and carrying a blue glazed jug, decorated with trompe l'oeil painting. The wooden piece displays ochre, terracotta, and brown tones across the simple dress, apron, and hair, complemented by a trough base at the bottom for sticks or umbrellas. Showing slight wear to the paint finish, the item measures 95 cm high by 35 cm wide by 26 cm deep. Positioned beside the front door in a hallway, the stick stand is useful for holding visitors' canes and umbrellas in an English country house setting. The decorative figural design presents a practical furnishing option for everyday entryways.

FAQs

Dummy boards, also known as silent companions, originated in the seventeenth century and remained popular through the Victorian era. These life-size or miniature painted cut-outs were placed in homes to give the illusion of company, fill empty hearths, or serve functional roles such as holding umbrellas and walking sticks.

Traditional dummy boards were constructed from flat wooden boards, typically pine or oak, shaped with bevelled edges to enhance the three-dimensional illusion. The figures were painted in oil with trompe loeil detail and supported by an integral rear wooden easel or metal bracket.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural craquelure to the paint surface, hand-cut bevelled timber edges, and signs of wear along the base. The reverse side typically shows hand-planed wood, age-appropriate oxidisation, and period attachment hardware.

Position the piece near an entryway, porch, or hallway coat rack to provide both functional storage for umbrellas and a historic focal point. They also suit fireside alcoves, boot rooms, and stair landings in traditional or eclectic interior schemes.

Dust the painted surface gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush. Avoid water, commercial polishes, or solvent cleaners that can strip original oil paint, and keep the board away from direct heat sources and damp environments.
