Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE VICTORIAN ERA:
Cast brass roundel showing the E.C. postal district: postcodes came into use in 1857.
Heavy riveted iron casing with pintle hinges: standard industrial safe-making of the late 1800s.
Original fluted cast brass knob and matching escutcheon: period Victorian fittings.
Internal locking drawer with stamped maker's handle: original interior arrangement remains intact.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian safe is fashioned from polished steel, cast iron, and brass with a weathered, textured grey finish. The substantial industrial piece presents a moulded rectangular door panel with heavy iron hinges at the right side, an ornate round reeded brass knob towards the lower left of the door, a circular brass maker plaque positioned above the handle, and an additional rectangular brass plaque beside it. The body measures 51 cm high, 41 cm wide, and 39 cm deep. Positioned in an empty corner, this compact antique provides functional storage and surface display within a contemporary home or study. The heavy construction and distressed metal surface suit industrial loft interiors. Users can store valuables securely inside while utilizing the flat top surface as a small side table or display stand.

FAQs

Victorian iron safes were developed during the Industrial Revolution to protect deeds, currency, and valuables from fire and theft. Produced by specialized locksmiths and iron founders, they represent a key evolution in security engineering and corporate furniture.

These security boxes were constructed with heavy cast iron or wrought steel outer casings, often insulated with fire-resistant compositions such as clay or sawdust mixed with alum. Decorative details such as knobs, keyhole escutcheons, and makers emblems were typically cast in solid brass.

Authentic pieces feature heavy-gauge metal construction, hand-fitted brass hardware, and raised makers plates detailing London or regional foundry names. Original locking mechanisms, heavy door hinges, and substantial weight are key indicators of period construction.

A polished or burnished safe functions effectively as an industrial side table, lamp stand, or bedside cabinet. Placing modern artwork or ceramics atop the flat upper surface provides a visually striking contrast between heavy metallic texture and contemporary decor.

Bare or polished metal surfaces should be kept dry to prevent surface oxidisation and rust. Microcrystalline wax applied periodically protects the finish and preserves the lustrous sheen, while brass fittings should be cleaned with a soft microfibre cloth.
