Very Fine Quality George III Period Pembroke Table

18th century
Description

An especially fine quality antique Pembroke table. This table is made from several very expensive exotic timbers, the satinwood show wood is contrasted with king wood cross banding and stringing of box and ebony with panels inlaid to the legs and frieze in tulip wood. The proportions are perfect, with tall tapered legs and thin frieze. There is a drawer to one side and a false drawer to the other, both with original handles. This is one of the best examples of the period that one could hope to find and with such excellent colour and patina it surely would compliment (or improve!) even the finest of houses.

C.1790

Provinance: The drawer interior with ink inscription '5619'

The beech drawer back with a paper label inscribed in ink 'F. TUGWELL, SCARBOROUGH Ap.1887'

The under drawer stretcher inscribed in pencil 'Tugwell'

This George III period Pembroke table belongs to the Georgian style, constructed from satinwood, kingwood, rosewood, boxwood, ebony, tulipwood, and brass with a golden amber colour. The piece presents a rectangular top with rounded drop leaves, crossbanded borders, stringing, and inlaid panels on the square tapered legs and the thin frieze, which holds a single drawer fitted with brass ring handles. Additional visible details include brass castors on the legs and an ink inscription inside the drawer interior. The table measures 73 cm high, 51.5 cm wide, and 81.5 cm deep. In a modern home, this occasional table suits placement at the end of a sofa or beside a chair in an English country house setting. The drop leaves provide flexible surface space for lamps, books, or drinks in a living room or sitting area.

Originating in the late 18th century, a Pembroke table is a portable drop-leaf table designed for occasional use such as serving tea, writing, or dining, characterised by two hinged leaves and a single frieze drawer.

Cabinetmakers commonly utilised fine hardwoods such as satinwood, mahogany, and rosewood, frequently incorporating contrasting boxwood stringing, crossbanded borders, and brass castors.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints within the frieze drawer, period brass hardware, subtle hand-planed marks on unexposed undersides, and natural age-related patination at the drop-leaf hinges.

A Pembroke table can be placed with its leaves lowered against a wall as a console table or beside seating, with the leaves extended whenever additional surface space is required.

Maintain the finish by keeping the piece clear of direct sunlight and heat radiators, dusting with a soft microfibre cloth, and applying a natural beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain.
