This nineteenth-century side table in the William IV style comes in a warm brown polished mahogany timber. The rectangular top has rounded corners, surmounting a single long frieze drawer fitted with two original turned wooden knobs. Four robustly turned legs support the structure, terminating in brass castors. The polished finish extends to the reverse of the piece to allow freestanding placement in a room. Measuring 74 cm high, 91 cm wide and 51 cm deep, this side table serves practically in a hallway beside the front door for incoming post and keys, or functions equally well as a compact writing desk or lamp table in a sitting room.

Side tables produced in 19th-century Britain were designed as versatile utility furniture for drawing rooms, libraries, and hallways. Cabinetmakers such as Gillows of Lancaster established standard proportions, using rich West Indian mahogany with fine hand-turned legs, dovetailed frieze drawers, and brass castors.

These tables were primarily built using solid mahogany or dense mahogany veneers over oak or pine drawer linings. Joinery featured hand-cut dovetails, turned wooden drawer knobs or brass handles, and cast brass wheel castors fitted to tapered or turned legs.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints inside drawers, natural shrinkage marks along unexposed timber, and maker marks or serial stamps along drawer edges or undersides. The timber demonstrates a deep, oxidized patina and weight characteristic of dense, old-growth mahogany.

An antique side table functions well as an entryway console table, a compact laptop workspace, or a side table behind a sofa. Pair the dark mahogany wood tone with neutral wall paint, contemporary ceramic lamps, or abstract artwork to balance modern and historical elements.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft microfiber cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the timber patina. Keep the table away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage and veneer movement.
