FAQs

A French refectory table is a long, narrow dining table historically derived from monastic dining halls, designed to accommodate large gatherings. Over time, these tables were adapted for provincial home kitchens and farmhouses, characterised by sturdy timber construction and functional frieze drawers.

These tables are traditionally constructed from solid hardwoods or softwoods such as oak, pine, walnut, or chestnut. The bases were frequently painted or left raw, featuring mortise-and-tenon joinery, thick plank tops, and sturdy legs designed for daily utility.

Authentic historical pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, pegged construction, and genuine wear along the lower framework. Look for original hand-planed top planks, traditional drawer construction, and honest age-related patination on painted bases.

Pair the table with contrasting modern minimalist chairs or upholstered dining armchairs to balance its rustic texture. Keep tabletop decoration simple with a single ceramic vessel or linen runner to highlight the natural timber grain of the surface.

Clean the surface regularly with a dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that can strip historical finishes. Protect unsealed timber tops with a high-grade natural beeswax applied along the grain of the wood.
