This antique Tibetan Wangden from 1850 is a traditional monastic seating mat originating from Tibet. The square handwoven wool and cotton textile displays a distinctive Tibetan style defined by a central square grid containing abstract linear patterning, bordered by a geometric key motif in red, blue, and cream. A thick, shaggy wool fringe in dark blue frames the entire perimeter of the piece, contrasting with the warm red, turquoise, and pale greenish tones of the central field. Organic dyes provide vibrant coloration across the dense pile surface. Measuring 100 cm high by 87 cm wide, the mat has a substantial format suited to a variety of interior placements. Today, such a piece functions well as a decorative floor rug, a wall-hanging display item, or an accent textile placed over a bench or chair within a bohemian or eclectic living space.

Wangden rugs originate from the Wangden valley in Tibet, traditionally hand-woven by monks and local artisans primarily for use as seating cushions in monasteries and homes. They feature a unique warp-loop knot technique resulting in a heavy, thick pile and distinctive long fringe along the outer edge.

These mats are constructed using hand-spun sheep wool on a cotton or wool warp foundation, coloured with vegetable dyes. The weaving process utilises a distinctive continuous loop-knotting method with thick yarn, producing a soft, durable pile framed by a prominent uncut or cut wool fringe.

Authentic Wangden pieces exhibit a heavy structure, thick wool yarn, and characteristic fringe borders extending around the perimeter. Inspection of the reverse side reveals coarse, flexible warp-knotted construction and gentle colour variations typical of natural dye lots.

Small Wangden mats function effectively as tactile accent pieces placed on wooden benches, armchairs, or displayed as woven wall hangings. Their geometric motifs and rich colourways add visual texture to eclectic, bohemian, or minimalist spaces.

Regular maintenance involves gentle shaking or low-suction vacuuming without a rotating brush to protect the delicate fringe. Professional dry cleaning or specialist hand-washing is recommended for stain removal, along with keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading.
