This unusual Edwardian storage box and humidor takes the form of a Great Western Railway coal wagon tender, dating from around 1900. Constructed from warm brown oak, brass, and iron, the rectangular body features distinct diagonal timber bracing, metal corner brackets, and white painted GWR lettering alongside the number 1144 on the side panel. The top holds a layer of real coal decoration fitted with a central lifting ring and a hidden key slot to access the hinged lid. The undercarriage rests on iron spoke wheels with metal buffers projecting from each end. It measures 16 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 17 cm deep. Today, this railway interest casket functions as a versatile desktop accessory in a gentleman's library or home office, serving as a humidor or a secure container for jewellery and precious items. The working lock and original key provide secure closure while the patinated wood and steel surfaces add authentic character to a workspace. Placed upon a desk, bookcase, or side table, the antique railway model offers practical storage alongside historical locomotive design.

Popular during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, novelty humidors were decorative desktop tobacco storage boxes designed in whimsical forms, such as railway coal wagons, reflecting contemporary industrial transport themes.

These items were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak or mahogany, fitted with cast brass, iron, or bronze mountings, and often featured hand-painted lettering or textured composite coal lids.

Genuine period examples display hand-finished cabinetwork, age-appropriate oxidation on metal wheels and buffers, authentic period insignia, and natural patination across timber surfaces.

This piece serves as a conversation-starting accent on an office desk, library shelf, or sideboard, integrating effectively alongside dark wood furniture, leather bindings, and vintage industrial antiques.

Dust the wood regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish periodically, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or water contact near metal fittings and original painted detailing.
