A Barr, Flight & Barr Worcester Porcelain Centrepiece Decorated by Billingsley C.1808-13

18th century
Description

A Barr, Flight & Barr Worcester Porcelain Dessert Dish c.1808 – 1813. Of oval lobed form, very finely painted in William Billingsley’s distinctive style with brightly coloured garden flowers to the centre and around the border.

Impressed crown and BFB mark, printed Flight, Barr and Barr mark referring to Coventry Street address

William Billingsley travelled to Worcester from Wales in 1808 and remained there until November 1813, around the time of the change in the partnership from Barr, Flight and Barr to Flight, Barr and Barr. He initially worked as a flower painter and a small number of finely decorated services are a tribute to his genius.

These pieces are from an exceptional service painted by Billingsley with single flowers. A pair of dishes from the same service are in the Museum of Worcester Porcelain.

Barr, Flight & Barr Worcester porcelain produced between 1804 and 1813 represents a period of English ceramic production known for soft-paste bodies, hand-painted decoration, and elaborate gilt borders.

These pieces were crafted from soft-paste porcelain, moulded into shaped forms, fired, and painted using enamel pigments before honey gilding was applied and burnished by hand.

Authentic examples frequently feature impressed factory marks such as BFB beneath a crown, incised or script manufacturer marks, translucent porcelain bodies, and detailed botanical painting.

Position the piece on a sideboard, dining table, or console surface as an ornamental focal point, pairing it with neutral backdrops to highlight the gilded detailing and botanical artwork.

Dust gently with a soft dry brush or wipe with a soft cloth dampened in lukewarm distilled water without detergent, avoiding abrasive scrubbers or immersion to protect the gilding and enamel.
