This eighteenth-century Georgian cricket table is a rustic farmhouse side table of primitive sculptural form. The piece consists of a solid, thick circular burr elm top displaying rich warm brown tones, varied burr wood figure, and a chamfered edge to the underside, set on three original splayed wooden legs with plain round profiles and tapered feet. Surface wear includes visible tool marks, surface scuffs, and dry untouched ageing to the timber. The table stands 70 cm high, 47 cm wide, and 47 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this small table serves well as an accent piece placed at the end of a sofa or beside a chair in a living room, hallway, or bedroom. Its compact footprint makes it practical for displaying small lamps, books, or decorative objects while adding a tactile element to an interior.

A cricket table is a traditional piece of British vernacular furniture characterised by its circular wooden top and three splayed legs. Originating in the sixteenth century and widely produced through the eighteenth century, the three-legged design provided stability on uneven stone, brick, or earthen floors in cottages, dairies, and taverns.

Cricket tables were primarily crafted from native British hardwoods, most commonly oak, elm, ash, and fruitwoods. Regional cabinetmakers often used burr elm or figured timbers for the tops, securing the legs using mortise and tenon joints directly into the thick timber undersides.

Authentic period examples display signs of genuine age, such as uneven timber shrinkage resulting in a slightly oval top, natural wear to the lower feet, and original hand-turned or shaved legs. Surface patination, evidence of historical hand tools, and undisturbed underside joinery further confirm eighteenth-century construction.

A cricket table functions as an occasional side table beside a sofa or armchair, or positioned within a reading nook. Its compact footprint and distinct tripod shape allow it to blend into both traditional country interiors and minimalist contemporary spaces seeking warm timber textures.

Preserve the natural finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent timber movement, cracking, or shrinkage.
