This nineteenth-century Chinese Jian sword belongs to the Qing Dynasty period and originates from the year 1870. The piece comprises a double-edged dark grey steel blade paired with a fluted dark wood grip. Brass hardware includes an engraved brass pommel, a zoomorphic brass guard, and matching collar fittings, showing signs of tarnish from age. The wooden grip displays vertical fluting, and the brass elements feature intricate engraved decoration. Measuring 53 cm in width across the guards with a depth of 3 cm and a height of 8 cm, the sword sits appropriately in a gentleman's library setting. Collectors place the item horizontally above a sideboard as a decorative wall display or mount it on a dedicated desk stand. The weapon suits historical weapon displays and traditional study interiors alongside books, globes, and antique scientific instruments.

The Jian is a double-edged straight sword used in China for over two millennia, historically carried by scholars, officers, and martial artists. During the Qing Dynasty (16441912), short Jian swords were commonly produced for personal defence, ceremonial use, and military officers.

A 19th-century Jian typically features a forged steel blade, often laminated for strength, along with cast or engraved brass fittings including a guard, pommel, and collar. The grip is commonly carved from dense hardwoods, horn, or bone, featuring longitudinal fluting for improved handling.

Authentic 19th-century examples exhibit signs of hand forging on the steel blade, natural oxidisation on the brass mounts, and wear around the grip consistent with age. Hand-engraved motifs on the brass guard and pommel, along with precise weight distribution, further distinguish period pieces from modern reproductions.

An antique sword can be incorporated into interior schemes by displaying it horizontally on custom stands within a glass display case or mounted flat on a wall. It serves as an architectural accent above a console table, within a library, or alongside curated collectables.

To preserve an antique sword, the steel blade should be kept lightly oiled with acid-free mineral oil to prevent rust, and stored in a low-humidity environment. Avoid polishing away the historic patina on brass fittings, and dust the textured wooden grip gently with a soft, dry brush.
