This Edo period Japanese samurai tanto dagger is an edged weapon dating from around 1750. The piece comprises a steel blade enclosed in a black lacquered wooden saya, accompanied by a handle with tsuka-ito wrapping, rayskin, and metallic mounts and fittings made of a copper alloy. The ensemble exhibits a black finish with aged copper alloy hardware and a textured diamond-pattern handle wrap. The dagger measures 48 cm wide, 4 cm high, and 2 cm deep. Suiting a gentleman's library theme, this tanto rests horizontally on a bookshelf or sits inside a display cabinet as part of an edged weapons collection. The construction relies on traditional craftsmanship involving wood, steel, lacquer, and rayskin, reflecting the aesthetic standards of the Edo period. The unsigned tang and kozuka complete the assembly, which maintains its original character and components without modern restoration work.

A tanto is a single-edged or double-edged short sword worn by samurai, characterized by a blade length under one shaku. During the Edo period (16031867), these daggers evolved from purely utilitarian weapons into highly refined status symbols featuring decorative mountings.

Tanto blades were forged from folded carbon steel (tamahagane). The hilts typically utilised ray skin (samegawa) wrapped with silk or leather cordage (tsuka-ito), while the scabbards (saya) were crafted from carved wood coated in protective urushi lacquer.

Authentic pieces feature signs of traditional forging, such as a visible grain structure (hada) and temper line (hamon) on the steel. The tang (nakago) often bears age-appropriate oxidisation and may include maker signatures or peg holes (mekugi-ana).

A tanto should be placed horizontally on a dedicated wooden display stand (katanakake) with the curve facing downwards. It serves as an intellectual focal point when positioned on a library bookshelf, console, or executive desk.

Steel blades require periodic oiling with traditional clove oil (choji) to prevent rust, applying it with rice paper. Lacquered scabbards and fabric wrappings should be kept away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and fluctuating temperatures.
