Large Neoclassical Painted Pine Column Pedestal / Plinth Side Table 18th C

18th century
Description

An impressive large-scale late 18th century English painted pine column pedestal, beautifully aged and retaining a wonderfully decorative, timeworn surface.

The original painted finish has naturally worn and peeled back over time, revealing layers of warm cream, black, gilt and green, creating a richly textured patina unique to the piece.

Designed in the Neoclassical manner, the pedestal features a simple cylindrical shaft raised and terminating upon a stepped and moulded plinth base. Its generous proportions make it particularly well suited for displaying a large bust, sculpture, urn or decorative object at a commanding height.

Equally striking when used as a side or centre table, the pedestal works as both a functional piece of furniture and a sculptural architectural element in its own right.

A highly decorative statement piece with excellent scale, character and an exceptionally attractive aged surface.

Date of Manufacture

The Real Wood Furniture Company has dated this Neoclassical Painted Column Pedestal to the 18th Century.

This large late 18th-century English column pedestal follows a Neoclassical design, constructed from painted pine with a generous cylindrical shaft. The structure rises from a stepped and moulded plinth base, showing a timeworn and heavily distressed painted finish that reveals weathered layers of cream, black, gilt and green across the surface. Visible signs of age include natural wear and peeling paint that create a richly textured patina unique to the column body. Standing at a commanding height, the pedestal functions well for displaying a large sculpture, urn, bust or decorative object in an empty corner. It also serves effectively as a side or centre table in a living space or hallway as a sculptural architectural element.

Originating in the 18th century during the revival of Classical antiquity, Neoclassical column pedestals were designed to mimic Greco-Roman architectural elements. They were primarily used in formal interiors to display portrait busts, sculptures, urns, or decorative flora.

18th-century painted pedestals were frequently constructed from native softwoods such as pine or deal, which were then primed and hand-painted or gessoed. This technique allowed cabinetmakers to imitate marble or stone at a fraction of the cost and weight.

Authentic 18th-century pieces often exhibit hand-planed joinery, natural shrinkage across the grain, and multi-layered paint finishes showing authentic age-related craquelure or wear. The underside and internal framing typically show hand-sawn timber marks without modern machine cuts.

A painted column plinth can serve as an architectural accent in an entry hall or empty corner, supporting a bronze sculpture, ceramic vase, or trailing houseplant. It can also function as a distinctive end table alongside modern seating.

To preserve historic paint finishes, dust gently using a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding wet wiping or chemical solvents. Maintain a stable indoor environment away from direct heat sources and dampness to prevent wood movement and flaking paint.
