Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A traditional French bureau plat features a flat writing surface, typically fitted with a leather insert, paired with frieze drawers set above tapered legs. Nineteenth-century examples often draw inspiration from Louis XVI and Neoclassical design, using dark ebonised finishes paired with gilt-brass accents.

These pieces are typically constructed from dense hardwoods that receive an ebonised stain or lacquer to mimic solid ebony. Decorative highlights are rendered using cast brass or ormolu mounts, with writing surfaces traditionally lined in hand-tooled leather.

Authentic pieces feature traditional joinery, such as hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, cast metal fittings secured with antique screw threads, and aged gilding on the leather tooling and brass mounts.

An ebonised desk functions well as a focal point in a home office, library, or dedicated study area. Contrast the dark, geometric frame with neutral wall palettes, contemporary seating, or structured desk accessories.

Maintain the finish by dusting the ebonised wood surfaces with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding ammonia-based chemical cleaners. The leather insert should be conditioned periodically with a specialist leather cream to prevent drying and cracking.
